Marty Supreme

"I have a purpose. If you think that it's some kind of blessing it's not. It means I have an obligation to see a very specific thing through."

A fast paced story of inexhaustible ambition and ultimate inner purpose from the director of the Uncut Gems, Josh Safdie. The characters are bold and well-defined. Each of them with a set of strong motives that sometimes aligned and others collide with great ramifications. Marty Mauser is capable of anything in order to achieve his goal of conquering the world of table tennis. The sacrifices he chooses to make shape sharply the set he is ready to star into in pursuit of his greatest ambition.

The rhythm of the film is synced with a ping pong game pace. Almost every scene is intense and ardent with small breaks of calm. There are some scenes (the honey scene, the bathtub scene etc) that seem a little decoying in the first view. However, these parenthetical scenes reveal to us essential dimensions of the characters, shaping how we perceive them. And personally speaking the inserted “honey scene” it’s one of the best I’ve ever seen…simple, brief but with unbearable weight. Moreover, it’s interesting to note that despite being a movie about a ping pong athlete there are little to no scenes referring to the technical part of the sport. We don’t see Marty preparing physically for the tournaments nor explaining his playing strategy. Only the psychological part of his extraordinary journey is accessible to the audience. His mission is full of thrilling adventures, devastating losses and epic victories.
